HAVING PETS-by Paloma Macazaga

HAVING PETS
Most kids in the world ask their parents for pets. They think they’re very cute and funny and they love the idea of always having someone to play with, but they don’t realize how much responsibility is needed when having pets.
Before buying or adopting an animal you need to know if you’re actually going to be able to take care of him/her, which doesn’t just mean feeding them, but also playing with them and giving them love. If they are pets such as dogs you need to walk them. They need to have a suitable and nice place for them to play around, sleep and basically do all of the ordinary things they do throughout their lives. If someone wants small pets like guinea pigs, fishes or turtles, they need to buy a cage or a fish tank so that they can keep them in there. Since these pets are small they don’t need huge areas, but if you do want pets like dogs or cats you would need more space. You have to make sure they and also their areas are clean.
When getting a pet, you have to think about everything beforehand.  As I said before, you’re gonna have to know how much time you’ll be able to spend with it, and also keep in mind children. Think about the animal that suits you best: do you have enough space for a pet such as a dog? Can you afford to own an animal that requires many things? Will there be someone who could take care of them when you travel?
My favourite animals to have as pets would be a dog or a cat, which are probably the most common ones. There are hundreds of breeds, and they are so different, it’s crazy. I don’t think it is necessary to have a backyard for a dog, it would probably be better for them so that they can run around and play outside, this way they’d be happier I guess, but this doesn’t mean that if you live in the city and you don’t have a garden you can’t have dogs. Since I was one year old, I’ve always had pets in my life. I’ve had four dogs and one cat. We adopted the first two dogs when I couldn’t even talk and they’ve been a huge part in my life. They were a German shepherd and a Labrador. One summer a cat appeared in our garden, so we took him to the vet and because he didn’t have an owner we decided to keep him. The German shepherd was sadly suffering a lot when she was about 10 so we decided to sacrifice her, which was the best we could do. Then my auntie gave us a boxer that used to be hers, but she realised that she couldn’t take care of her anymore. Right now I only have my cat, whom I love very much.

In conclusion, I think pets are a great thing, I personally love animals, but they are a major commitment and they come joined together with a lot of responsibility.
