This is a book  about a boy from Madrid during the Civil War. He has to travel to Bilbao with his uncle and aunt becaus his father has been murdered. His father was the warden of a prision and for policy issues that he has been killed.

When Anastasio, the main character, arives to Bilbao, his uncle and aunt are in shock because they almost have never seen each other. When he starts to adapt to this city, he meets a group of friends.In this group the “leader” is Enrique, a bold boy who intents to live his adolescence with real intensity without being caught by priests, this leads him to go through bad situations that he overcomes unscathed. Enrique goes to a boarding school, this causes his group to split up and he leaves Celia, his girlfriend.

After a while the group comes back together because a member of a group is killed in the Civil War. After this event the members decide to do something for helping their friend; one of the group goes to the war, others get drunk and others stay to die. The group separates again.

Now the people strart to live his life and they don´t see each other, but they meet again because of the weding of Celia´s sister. They start to tell each other their lifes and one says that he is going to work in America in a field and with this he will earn a lot of money, this catches Enrique's atenttion but he doesn´t  want to work like his friend, he just wants the money. Enrique kills his girlfriend because she has the money so he can buy the field. He goes to the station to say goodbye to his friends, everyone one is there but not Anastasio. This is going to be the last time that they see each other, because in Galicia the police catches Enrique and gets him into jail.

After a few years Enrique and Anastasio return to see each other, but in this situation Anastasio is the leader because he is the warden of the prision where Enrique is.
