THE EASTER TREE WITH 10.000 PAINTED EGGS.
In his childhood (around 1945) Wolker Kraft saw a
beautiful Easter decorated tree in his home town, so he wanted a tree like
this. These trees are called “Eierbaum”, “Osterbaum” or “Ostereierbaum” in
German, meaning that is decorated with eggs at Easter.
…and then, in 1965, it happened. Wolker Kraft that was
happily married and had children, realized his dream of having his own
Eierbaum. He decorated a small apple tree in his garden
with 18 colorful Easter eggs (that were made of plastic) for his children.
But soon, Wolker realized that the tree begun to
grow-fast so he started to use and paint the eggs that they needed to bake
cakes. Kraft’s children grew and started to paint but when they went off their
house the first grandchildren came and decorated the tree again.
Christa Kraft started to crochet eggs in different
colors and Kraft’s daughter, Gabriela Rumrich, that is the painter in the
family, drew artistic patterns with silver and gold colors.
To decorate the Eierbaum initially took only one day.
In 2002 they decorated the tree in a week and in 2014 they spent more than two
weeks decorating the tree with 10.000 eggs.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall visitors started to
come and one of them reported it to the local press so they started to have visitors
from all over the world.
Wolker probably never thought that his dream was going
to come true. The best reward for all the work are the smiles of the children
and he and his family are so proud that so many people visit the Eierbaum year
after year.
