Bonfire Night

Bonfire night is also known as Guy Fawkes Night because on the 5th of November of 1605, a group of men attempted to carry out the 'Gunpowder plot'. The Gunpowder plot consisted on trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament and killing King James I and the rest of the members of Parliament. The man who was supposed to light the barrels of gunpowder was named Guy Fawkes. The plan failed because one of the conspirators sent a letter to his cousin warning him not to visit the Houses of Parliament during that day. Fawkes was caught just before lighting the fuse to the 36 barrels of gunpowder. After that he was found guilty of attempt of murder against the king, therefore he was executed.
Today, the plot continues being remembered by the use of fireworks, bonfire parties and general celebrations.
During this celebration, bonfires are lit and everybody gathers to see the fireworks displays.  It is customary that during that night you throw “The Guy” (representing Guy Fawkes) into the flames. The Guy is made out of straw, just  like a scarecrow.
Songs like this are sung:

Remember, remember, the 5th of November

The Gunpowder Treason and plot;

I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason

Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,

'Twas his intent.

To blow up the King and the Parliament.

Three score barrels of powder below.

Poor old England to overthrow.

By God's providence he was caught,

With a dark lantern and burning match

Holloa boys, Holloa boys, let the bells ring

Holloa boys, Holloa boys, God save the King!

Hip hip Hoorah !
Hip hip Hoorah !
A penny loaf to feed ol' Pope,

A farthing cheese to choke him

A pint of beer to rinse it down,

A faggot of sticks to burn him.

Burn him in a tub of tar,'

Burn him like a blazing star.

Burn his body from his head,

Then we'll say "Ol' Pope is dead.”

I myself had the luck of experiencing it; it was great party at my friend Katy’s farm. We were outside, it was pitch black and really cold. We were all holding sparkling lights in our hands and wearing neon bracelets. The part I loved the most was the incredibly large firework display that could be seen on the bay with all the lights being reflected on the water. The bonfire flames went up really high in the sky. It was warm near the fire, but also scary. We really had an amazing night.
