NIGERIAN MUSIC-by Ethel S.V.

NIGERIAN MUSIC:
Nigeria has a very exotic type of music that includes mostly Folk, even though each ethnic group has their own techniques, songs, etc. For example, the ethnic group called Hausa is known because of instruments such as the goje. Hausa music also includes free-rythmic improvisation in their music

GOJE
At the same time, there is also the Igbo group, a Nigerian ethnic group that bases its music on folk instruments and on adopting foreign music. One of the instruments they use is the Obo, but they also use xylophones, flutes, etc. They use the music during royal traditions, such as waking up the chief and communicating information to him, or to announce when the chief goes and when the chief comes back.
Apart from ethnic groups, Nigerian children have their own way of creating music: with singing games, even though some are a bit obscene. They also use some instruments to create a rhythm or a beat with them.
In Nigeria, women have a very important place in music, as they are recognized for their achievements. Before the 21st century, women used to do traditional African music, but when the 21st century arrived, women changed along music, and they started covering a new variety of styles, such as Hip-hop, Rap, etc. An example of a famous singer is Omawumi Megbele.
In my opinion, Nigerian music is nothing from what I thought it would be. I expected it to be full of instruments and without any Hip- Hop or any other style like that, and I am surprised in a good way. My first expectation shows the ignorance we have from the world we live in. We may know things about places, but we have never experienced them so well in order to know their culture and, maybe, culture in different world places isn’t as different as we think, maybe there are more things in common than what we expect.
