Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe
Our
prom trip started with a visit to the Monastery of Guadalupe, which is situated
in Guadalupe, province of Caceres in the community of Extremadura.
We
were giving a tour with a tourist guide, who showed us some of its installations,
like for example: the huge and beautiful chapel, the long and incredible
corridors, a room with all the old costumes from the monks…
He
told us about an ancient legend that said: “after the death of San Lucas, the
image of the Virgin Santa Maria de Guadalupe was buried next to him. This one
was finally moved to Sevilla and due to the Arab invasion, clerics fled with
the image and hid this relic. Afterwards a Shepherd (called Gil Cordero) found
it, after an apparition of the Virgin, in which she indicated him where it was.
At
the end of the 13th century, the Sanctuary began to be built right
there, but Alfonso
XI (the king) ordered to construct a bigger church where the modest
Chapel had been built, thinking that Virgin had helped them in the victory of
battles.
The
guide also explained to us other
interesting information in relation to this incredible monument, such as that in
1993 this monument was declared as a
World Heritage Site and that inside of the
monument there is a little museum of art, paintings and embroideries; as well as
a lot of members of the royalty have been buried in the monastery…
We
enjoyed a lot with this visit. Monks and the guide were very nice and kind, and
thanks to them we learned a little more about de Spanish history.
