RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS-by Paloma Macazaga

RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS
Rhythmic gymnastics is a beautiful sport in which flexibility, strength and technique are combined. People who practice this sport are called gymnasts, and some of them compete against each other by themselves or in groups of five or more. They have to train a lot, maybe for fifty hours a week which is six to eight hours a day approximately. It's a very difficult sport that requires a lot of flexibility, but also a lot of ballet technique and acrobatics, and you have to be able to use the apparatus. The apparatus we use in gymnastics are the ribbon, the ball, the clubs, the hoop and the rope. Gymnasts perform using any of those, but they can do a freehand performance too. When they perform in groups they can use one or two apparatus. In some countries like Russia, rhythmic gymnastics is a very common sport and a lot of the best gymnasts are from there. Usually it´s girls who practice this sport, but recently a lot of boys have joined in too, thought only girls can compete in the Olympic Games.
I do rhythmic gymnastics, but I only train for four hours a week and I don't compete, I just do it for fun. We always start warming up and running a little bit, and then we start stretching to make sure we don't get injured and to gain flexibility and then depending on the day we practice our ballet technique with the bar or do jumps, but we usually practice using the apparatus, and right now I'm practicing the ball.

I think it is a beautiful sport to watch and to practice.
