Modern Family tells the story of three families that are connected: marriage Dunphy and their three children, the classic traditional family; the gay couple Mitchell-Cam, who have just adopted a Vietnamese baby and marriage Pritchett-Delgado, composed by the father of Claire and Mitchell, Jay, and a women much younger than her husband, Gloria , who also has a son who is fourteen years, Manny, from a previous marriage. Backed by critics, Modern Family is today the fashionable comedy that everyone sees.
Some of the main characters are:
Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen), is the daughter of Jay, the older sister of Mitchell, and the overprotective mother of the Dunphy family and their three children, all very different from each other. When she was young, she was a carefree and really irresponsible girl who made many mistakes over the years, and fears that their children will make the same mistakes.
"Phil" Dunphy (Ty Burrell) is the husband of Claire for 16 years, he sees himself as a cool father even though his kids don’t think the same. He loves his wife and tries to constantly find ways to maintain a good relationship with his three children. He also has a youthful attitude. He works as a real estate agent and he feels really confident of himself in his work.
Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill), better known as Jay, is the father of Claire and Mitchell. He is married to Gloria and is the stepfather of her son, Manny; He is much older than Gloria and they have confused him with his father on more than one occasion, and that really bothers him. Sometimes he has fights between him and his wife and stepson because of the deep roots of colombian culture they have. In the majority of occasions Jay is able to tolerate the sensitivity of Manny and Gloria’s attitude but sometimes he can't control himself so he makes a comment. Although he usually has a tough attitude, he appreciates all the members of his large family ( even Phil) , and is usually the one who has more common sense.
Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) is Jay’s son, brother of Claire and Cameron’s couple for five years. He is a really discreet and gentle person. In many situation she is exactly the opposite to Cameron, what tends to cause arguments between them. Cameron usually acts without thinking and that tends to annoy Mitchell. He is not ashamed of his homosexuality and criticizes the homophobic attitudes, sometimes even in public. Mitchell and his sister, Claire, are competitive, and his father, Jay, is not entirely comfortable with the idea of his son being gay.
