THE GOYA AWARDS 2015-by Catalina Pelaez

Spain celebrates, each year, the “Goya Awards”. These awards are given by the Spanish Academy of Cinematic Art and Science, recognizing the best professionals in the Spanish cinematographic industry, in each one of the technical and creative specialties. Also, in the ceremony, another prize is delivered: the “Honorary Goya Award”, a prize that recognizes the labor and dedication to this industry of a film-maker previously chosen.
The first edition took place on March 17th, 1987 at the Lope de Vega theatre in Madrid, and they are annually celebrated around the end of January
WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
The argument that explains the name of the “Goyas”, is that Francisco de Goya was a very famous Spanish painter whom pictorial concept was close to the cinema and that represents the culture of the country. It also was a good name, because it was short and similar to the famous American awards one;the Oscars.

HOW DOES THE TROPHYLOOK LIKE?
The first trophy that was given was made by a sculptor called Miguel Ortiz Berrocal, that combined Francisco de Goya’s bust and a camera. Since the celebration of the second edition, the trophy was remodeled by the sculptor Jose Luis Fernández, and his design is the actual one: a small bronze bust that represents Francisco de Goya.
