SAN
ISIDRO
HISTORY:
He
was born in Madrid on April 4th 1082, where he lived with his family
until they moved to Torrelaguna. There he married Santa Maria de la
Almudena , in 1109, and 10 years later he returned to Madrid to work
as a servant for the Vargas family, living in the house that they had
for the farmhands. There his only son, Juan was born.
Labrador
was a carpenter and had a deep faith and devotion to the Virgin and
charity. Every day he went to the Almudena Cathedral, and the church
of St. Mary Magdalene. This provoked criticism from some of his
colleagues for abandoning his work. He was also devoted to
the poor, with the help of his wife.
His
miracles:
- Once brought forth a torrent of a rock to give water to the thirsty.
- He saved with his prayers his son, John, who fell into a well from which was saved miraculously.
Religious
acts:
Your
employer witnessed some of these miracles, so when San Isidro died on
November 30th 1172, at age 90, everyone considered him as a saint.
1619 he was beatified by the Holy See. He was canonized in 1622 by Pope
Gregory XV.
1752 his wife Santa Maria de la Cabeza was
proclaimed a saint.
Celebrations:
The
celebrations of San Isidro are annual festivals celebrated in Madrid
in honor of the patron of the city. Traditionally they are installed
in the neighborhood of San Isidro in Carabanchel. Are celebrated over
a period of a few days around May 15. These are distinguished by the
romerías, festivals, attractions and many traditional shows. The
celebration of this festival takes place at the Pradera de San Isidro
and in the surrounding streets
