SAN ISIDRO- by Carmen Lías

SAN ISIDRO

HISTORY:
He was born in Madrid on April 4th 1082, where he lived with his family until they moved to Torrelaguna. There he married Santa Maria de la Almudena , in 1109, and 10 years later he returned to Madrid to work as a servant for the Vargas family, living in the house that they had for the farmhands. There his only son, Juan was born.
Labrador was a carpenter and had a deep faith and devotion to the Virgin and charity. Every day he went to the Almudena Cathedral, and the church of St. Mary Magdalene. This provoked criticism from some of his colleagues for abandoning his work. He was also devoted to the poor, with the help of his wife.
His miracles:
  • Once brought forth a torrent of a rock to give water to the thirsty.
  • He saved with his prayers  his son, John, who fell into a well from which was saved miraculously.
Religious acts:
Your employer witnessed some of these miracles, so when San Isidro died on November 30th 1172, at age 90, everyone considered him as a saint.
1619 he was beatified by the Holy See. He was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV.
1752 his wife Santa Maria de la Cabeza was proclaimed a saint.
Celebrations:
The celebrations of San Isidro are annual festivals celebrated in Madrid in honor of the patron of the city. Traditionally they are installed in the neighborhood of San Isidro in Carabanchel. Are celebrated over a period of a few days around May 15. These are distinguished by the romerías, festivals, attractions and many traditional shows. The celebration of this festival takes place at the Pradera de San Isidro and in the surrounding streets
