While we were in Portugal the guide told us a popular legend of Lisbon :
The legend of the Rooster of Portugal tells the
story of a Galician pilgrim who
came from Lisbon road to Santiago
de Compostela, and was accused of stealing money
from a landlord, so he was sentenced to
the gallows. As a last wish, he asked to be brought to the judge, who was eating roasted rooster.
The pilgrim said that
as proof of his innocence, the
rooster would get up and crow. The judge took
the plate to one side and ignored the man's words.
but, right at the moment when the prisoner was being hanged, the rooster stood up and crowed. The judge, having realized his mistake, he ran to the gallows and discovered that the Galician was saved thanks to a knot badly done.

It may be true or not,
but that's what legends are for; to create mystery.
