YANKARI NATIONAL PARK-by Marta Acoitia

Yankari National Park
Its a large wild life park located in the east-central Nigeria. At first it was established as a reserve in 1956 and it became National Park in 1991.It is probably one of the biggest National Parks in Nigeria as it covers more than 2,254 square kilometers.
What makes this natural park so special is that it holds a large number of African species like baboons ,hippos , buffaloes, waterbucks, elephants… ; these also make it the most visited national park of the country.
The most important animals in the park has are the elephants since it owns the biggest population in West Africa, estimated in more than 340 in 2008.This big elephant population has become a problem for surrounding villages specially during the rainy seasons because the animals enter local farms. They also have caused damages in the park like stripping  baobab trees.
