THE BATTLE OF MOGADISHU
I’m going to talk about a real event that happened in Somalia
(Mogadishu), on the third of October of 1993.This event is known because after
the battle passed, Ridley Scott made a film(that I recommended because it’s a
very good film)in 2002 called: “Black Hawk Down”.
The mission of the soldiers sounded easy: capture some
leaders of the militia in thirty minutes. For this mission, United States
(helped by ONU) used: 160 soldiers, eight “Black Hawk” helicopters, eight “little
bird” helicopters and nine “humvees”. The mission was good but one Black Hawk
was shot down by a rpg(rocket launcher) of a militiaman and the mission of
capturing became a mission of rescue, but the mission turned for the worse when
a second Black Hawk was shot down in another part of the Bakaara’s market. The
mission of the soldiers that was supposed to be completed in thirty minutes,
finally lasted a day. Finally the Americans achieved their objective, but 19
Americans lost their lives on the battle and 300-500 militiamen too. This
battle happened because the leader of the militia, Mohamed Farrah Aidid, was killing
the population of Mogadishu to become rich and powerful.
Warfare is a fascinating subject. Despite the dubious morality of using violence to achieve personal or political aims. It remains that conflict has been used to do just that throughout recorded history.
